UW Continuum College, UW-IT, and the University of Washington provide a wide variety of tools for teaching and learning, in addition to Canvas, Open edX, and Zoom. It is important to note that UW Continuum College does not directly support all of these tools. However, we have compiled some information for commonly used learning technology tools that you may make use of in your courses, links to resources, and information on where to find support.
Ed Discussion is an online discussion platform and communication tool that integrates with Canvas. In particular, this tool supports questions and answers with peer or instructor endorsement of answers, features for moderation, and templated posts and replies. Users can navigate to an Ed Discussion board from the course navigation in a Canvas course, or log in directly by visiting http://edstem.org.
The vendor has a few helpful guides to help you get started in this tool. (If you are prompted to log in, please enter your UW email address)
- Using Ed Discussion walks through basics: how to navigate, start threads, answer questions, add comments, and search for specific content.
- Getting Started (Instructor) talks about some steps for setting up a new ed discussion space for a course. Only a few portions of this guide are relevant, since most of the setup takes place automatically using the integration with Canvas.
H5P is a suite of tools for creating interactive course content and providing layout, which can be integrated into course materials, including the Canvas learning management system.

H5P is currently only being set up through collaboration with our Instructional Design team. Contact ctnmhelp@uw.edu or your Program Manager for more information.
Some types of content available in H5P:
- Presentations

Panopto is the the University of Washington’s lecture capture solution. You can use it to easily record and review videos from courses, lectures, and presentations. Recordings in Panopto are viewable on most Web browsers and mobile devices. As of a recent update, you are also able to use Panopto to upload/host existing media for your course, such as your Zoom meeting recordings.
Poll Everywhere is centrally supported by UW Learning Technologies and UW-IT.
Some benefits of using Panopto include:
- Access to recordings is tied directly to Canvas course data and enrollment information.
- Panopto has a built in editor for recordings.
- When recording PowerPoint slideshows in Panopto, Panopto creates timed events for every slide change, and records the slide titles and any text, and makes it searchable, allowing students to find what they need easily.

Microsoft Teams is a FERPA-compliant collaboration and communication tool within UW Office 365. In some cases, a Program Manager and Instructor might request the creation of a MS Teams Instance for their course, specifically for the purpose of instructor and student use. MS Teams Instances should be used as a supplemental tool to Canvas, for communication, collaboration, and community-building use cases. Because the Teams Instance is being used as part of the student’s learning environment, it’s important to follow policies and teaching best practices.
Interested in other tools?
If you are interested in using other third-party tools or integrations in your course, you must review and follow the procedures outlined in our Use Policy for Third Party Tools and Integrations.
All apps in the UW LMS Vendor Integration Program and on the Canvas App Center have been evaluated by UW-IT and are safe to use. UW Continuum College also has a list of authorized tools for use in Canvas. If you have any questions about whether a tool already has a contractual agreement and signed data agreement, please contact ctnmhelp@uw.edu
If there is a tool that you wish to use in your course or program, please email ctmnhelp@uw.edu to determine if this is something that we can enable.
Please include the following information in your request:
- Course name
- Course launch date
- Requested technology
- Intended use for the technology in the course
Please note that data agreements may take up to 6 months to properly formulate, document, and process. Tools will not be enabled until this process is complete.
