UW PCE Syllabus Template
Your syllabus is a useful reference that sets the expectations for your course. Clearly define course details and learning objectives within your syllabus, and make sure it is easily accessible to all your students.
Developers for PCE programs should use the current syllabus template to ensure they provide comprehensive information that aligns with the program. That template is posted to the Syllabus and Slide Deck Templates page in the Canvas Resources Library.
Current Syllabus Template (2023)
Additionally, you can download a formatted version of the same Syllabus template content directly to your Canvas course from Canvas Commons. We recommend importing one of the two versions of this template into your Canvas course, then copying the content from the imported page into the Syllabus tool for your course.
- Log in to https://canvas.uw.edu
- Select Commons from the global navigation
- In the Search bar, enter “PCE Syllabus”
- Click the title of your preferred template to view:
- PCE Syllabus Template 2023 (Basic) has identical content to the Word doc with only basic formatting
- PCE Syllabus Template 2023 (Expandable) has the same content, but with built-in “accordions” that allow students to expand or minimize different sections of the page
- Once you’ve clicked your preferred template, click the Import/Download button
- Click the checkbox for the course where you would like to import the page and select Import into Course to confirm.
After a few minutes, the template should appear in the Pages section of your course. If you edit the page, you can select all the content from that page and then copy it from the Edit menu of the rich content editor. This content can be pasted directly when you edit the Syllabus section of your course.

Note: The second template (UW Brand Fonts) requires you to download three separate fonts from the UW brand site.
Tips for using the UW PCE branded template
- Do not apply the template over existing content. This causes errors, duplicated materials, and issues with accessibility.
- If you have an existing slideshow that needs to be updated to the current template, we recommend copying and pasting the materials over.
- Follow Best Practices for making your PowerPoint slides accessible
- Use unique titles for every slide
- Include alternative text with all visuals
- Use the PowerPoint Accessibility Checker tool
- Presentation slides can suffer from a common problem: Too much information! Senior Learning Designer Dr. Anne Tuominen asks: Do we need a slide for that? in this presentation about audience-centered slide design (rec. Jan, 2024).
