UW Continuum College Instructor Resources

Online Courses

Some certificate courses are offered fully online with no classroom component. In these instances, you’ll likely work closely with an instructional designer from UW PCE Academic Excellence team. They have the requisite technological and pedagogical expertise to guide you in making the most of the tools available to you.

Online courses are offered in three formats: group-paced, group-paced with real-time meetings, and self-paced. Each format is explained below.

Group-Paced

Group-paced courses allow students to start and finish a course or an entire program with set due dates. Collaboration, including discussions, assignments, and student interaction with instructors often take place over email or an LMS, such as Canvas.

Group-Paced with Real-Time Meetings

Just like with the group-paced format, this option allows students to start and finish a course or an entire program with set due dates. Collaboration among students and the instructor also often takes place over email or an LMS, such as Canvas. The biggest difference is that this format includes scheduled, real-time, class meetings where students and instructors meet via web conferencing tools.
